It’s been a while since I put together a small birthday celebration with friends—the last one was held two years ago in Relik, where I kept belting out Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth’s Defying Gravity (much to my friends’ dismay). Hahaha!
This year, I decided to put something together again since I wanted to fully embrace the “adulting” life.
I wanted the celebration to be simple and chill—where I’d be able to hang with my different groups, and catch up!At first, I thought about having it at home—but the idea of setting up, cooking food, buying drinks, and cleaning up after, seemed like a lot of work. Plus I wasn’t sure if all 30 of my guests would fit in our living room and veranda. So I decided to scout for other alternatives.
A lot of people asked me why I decided to have it in Sunrise Buckets (along Ortigas Avenue in Greenhills), and my reason was simple: I love their Jack Daniels wings! In fact, the Cupcake and I eat in this particular branch at least once a month. I also felt like it was the perfect venue, since it was big enough to fit 30 people and small enough that I’d be able to close it down.
The owner, Abigail, was extremely accommodating. We started talking mid-February—just so I could finalize my date and the menu for the evening. On the day itself, she made sure everything went smoothly despite being in Barcelona for a vacation. She left me in the hands of Conie, who was just so sweet and hospitable. Abigail even called from Barcelona to check on me and to tell me to feel at home—that I was free to change the music playlist, etc.
For the menu, I ordered six pounds each of Smokin’ BBQ, Sunrise Original, and Jack Daniels, and 8 orders each of Nachos and Dip, and Cheezy Fries. We also had a lot of beer to complement the wings! It was so much fun, and it was exactly the kind of birthday celebration I wanted—and I have Sunrise Buckets to thank for!
