The Story Behind Our Wedding Rings

Hi, everyone! My name is Gretchen Gatan Fragada. I’m a writer and managing editor based in Metro Manila, Philippines. Welcome to Greta’s Junkyard! This is basically a dump of articles on beauty, lifestyle, travel, and more. I started this creative outlet in 2013 with the help of my then-boyfriend-now-husband, Cayo.

And I’ve been using it to document the many milestones in my life. This includes our dream wedding and all its little details—such as the story behind our weddings rings!

Since tying the knot in September 2019, we moved into a studio unit in Makati that was near our previous offices, survived a pandemic together, moved into our forever home (also known as the Fraggy Home), got pregnant, and welcomed a beautiful baby girl named Cambria last December 2021. A lot of milestones have already happened since Cayo and I got married. But once in a while, I like to reminisce and look back on our wedding.

Our Dream Wedding

Cayo and I are both very driven and career-oriented individuals. We started out as good friends and Ultimate Frisbee teammates in 2009 before we officially got together in 2013. When it came to our long-term goals and plans, we were always on the same page. And this included shouldering all our wedding expenses. We worked hard to finance everything and refused to ask help from our parents (even though they offered). And I think this is what makes our dream wedding even more meaningful.

The Story Behind Our Wedding Rings

Since we declined any financial support from our parents, my mom and dad insisted that their wedding gift to us would be our wedding rings! After my mom’s experience working in the jewelry industry in Los Angeles a few years ago, I knew I could trust her with the supplier she chose—her suki jeweler in Shoppesville Greenhills, Orogem.

I’ve always been attracted to a half-eternity ring, especially after seeing different pegs on Pinterest. So Orogem custom-designed a half-eternity wedding ring with 13 diamonds on a white gold band. 13 represents Cayo’s and my special number. It was his jersey number in basketball and my jersey number in softball as we were growing up. When we became teammates in Ultimate, we jokingly fought over the number. And it’s also precisely this reason why he asked me to be his girlfriend on December 13, 2013 (a Friday the 13th) and we purposely chose September 13, 2019 (also a Friday the 13th) as our wedding date.

My wedding ring exquisitely matched the engagement ring that Cayo bought from Miladay. Meanwhile, his wedding ring was a simple, thick, white gold band that had a matte finish. Both rings were engraved with our names and wedding date!
