How to Cook Beef Broccoli with Mushroom in Oyster Sauce

When the Cupcake and I got married last year and moved in together, we both had to learn a lot of things that we weren’t really used to doing. One of these was cooking! Growing up, I learned my basic cooking skills during home economics classes in Poveda and of course, from my mom. But my knowledge in recipes has always been quite limited.

Cooking eggs or corned beef, and frying luncheon meat were things I could do. I also had my mom’s carbonara recipe memorized, since it was one of my favorite dishes growing up. But other than that, I had to rely a lot on websites like Panlasang Pinoy or All Recipes. Otherwise, my husband and I would be eating omelettes, corned beef, luncheon meat, and carbonara every single day!

We were further challenged when the enhanced community quarantine was implemented—because it meant really planning our menu daily from breakfast to dinner. And it was during this time that I was able to come up with different staple recipes that allowed my husband and I to survive for months without having to leave our studio unit. Here below is a recipe I learned to put together using just the usual ingredients we had in our kitchen.

What You Need for this Beef Broccoli Recipe

  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil
  • chopped garlic
  • 400 grams of beef sukiyaki strips cut into smaller pieces
  • salt and pepper
  • garlic powder
  • 500 grams of broccoli
  • 1 can of shitake mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup of oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil

How to Cook Beef Broccoli with Mushroom in Oyster Sauce

  1. sauté chopped garlic in olive oil until slightly golden
  2. add all of the beef sukiyaki strips and stir fry until brown
  3. season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder
  4. add broccoli and mix in with the beef until you feel like it’s almost cooked (I usually check with a clean fork)
  5. add a can of shitake mushrooms and mix in with the beef and broccoli
  6. stir fry everything for about 1 to 2 minutes (I use an induction stove so it might be different if you’re using a gas range. Just trust your gut! Haha.)
  7. pour 1/4 cup of oyster sauce (I don’t normally use a measuring cup and just trust my gut. Hahaha!)
  8. add a tablespoon of sesame oil (Again, I don’t really measure and just trust my gut. Haha!)
  9. mix everything again for about a minute or until you think it’s ready

So it’s a really quick and easy recipe. Preparing the ingredients and cooking everything takes me about 30 minutes, since I make sure to thaw out the beef in our refrigerator overnight. The broccoli, I would often buy those frozen bags from Landers so it’s already pre-cut. And since fresh shitake mushrooms can be quite expensive, I just get the canned ones from Landers as well.

For those who learn better by watching, I prepared a video tutorial below! I hope this super easy beef broccoli recipe helps out other people like me who just aren’t that knowledgable and patient in the kitchen. Hahaha!
