I don’t mention it as much on the blog, but a few years ago I was diagnosed with scoliosis (dextroscoliosis, to be more specific). I’m not really sure how it started, but I do know that my great grandmother had it so I most likely inherited it from her. I started to feel it when I was already a working girl, because I was usually seated for prolonged periods of time—which caused discomfort on my lower back.
It reached a point where I was really bothered by it, so I had it checked and it turns out that I had scoliosis. The doctor explained that it can be corrected during the formative years of the bones (meaning when you’re 18 years old and below)—but because I was already 26 at that time, the only option for me was to do therapy and strengthen my core, to help support my back.
This was around the time I started doing yoga again (I was usually on and off with my practice because of my hectic schedule), but I noticed that doing yoga also helped a lot in getting rid of the discomfort so I really made it a point to practice as often as I can, especially on weekends when I had more time.
The most convenient yoga studio for me was always Beyond Yoga in Il Terrazzo. It’s literally just 10 minutes away from my house, I never have to worry about parking, and it was the yoga studio I started with way back when I was still in college (so I love the familiarity of the place).
If you’re also experiencing the same discomfort on the lower back from sitting too long on your desk (even if it’s not scoliosis), I highly recommend doing yoga as regularly as possible. And if you think you have scoliosis, it doesn’t hurt to have it checked! Coming from someone who does have it, I can honestly attest to how yoga with Beyond Yoga Il Terrazzo helps with my scoliosis.
