It’s been a year since I started paying my SSS contributions as a voluntary member. Last year, when I became a managing editor for a Singapore-based company, I had to start filing my own taxes and paying my own contributions. These include SSS, PhilHealth, and PAG-IBIG. If you’re new to this and would like to know how to pay SSS using GCash, here’s a step-by-step guide that can help!
FAQ’s About SSS
Before I start, let’s first discuss some frequently asked questions about the Social Security System.
What is social security?
Social security is the protection that society provides against the economic hardships caused by life’s contingencies. Some of these include sickness, maternity, disability, old age, and death.
Why should you be a member of the SSS?
If you’re a member, you can depend on the SSS to provide financial support and assistance in times of emergencies. These can be in the form of cash allowances, pensions, or loans. However, it’s important to regularly and actively pay your contributions. Doing so allows you to avail benefits and loan programs that they offer.
What are SSS benefits?
They have two programs. First is the Social Security Program for death, disability, old age, maternity, and sickness. The second is the Employees’ Compensation Program for work-related injury, sickness, or death. Since I’m currently pregnant, I’m entitled to their maternity benefits!
How do you become a voluntary member?
If you’re employed, your company deducts your SSS contributions from your salary. They also do the leg work of paying your contributions directly to SSS. When I left the last local company I worked for in 2020, my SSS information automatically updated when I started paying as a volunteer. I just logged onto my SSS account, generated a Payment Reference Number, and paid my contributions for the rest of 2020 online.
How to Pay SSS Using GCash
There are different ways you can pay your SSS contributions. Some pay through Bayad Centers while others pay through banks. I find it the most convenient to pay via GCash. Here’s how!
Step 1: Log on to your SSS account
If you have an account with SSS, just log in. However, if you don’t have one yet, here’s a helpful article on how to register for an SSS account online.
Step 2: Generate your Payment Reference Number
On your dashboard, you’ll find a Payment Reference Number (PRN) – Contributions dropdown. Hover over it and click on Generate PRN. When you generate a PRN, you’ll need to select your Membership Type. In my case, Voluntary. You’ll also need to choose the applicable period that you want to cover. I prefer to pay my contributions annually. After filling out the applicable period, you’ll select your premium as well. (I read that you’re supposed to pay 12% of your monthly income.) As soon as you’ve chosen your premium, the total amount will be displayed. After checking this, just click on Submit Request.
Step 3: Take note of your Payment Reference Number
When you refresh or go back to the Payment Reference Number (PRN) – Contributions dashboard, you should find your PRN. Take note of this.
Step 4: Open your GCash app
Upon opening the app, click on Show More. Scroll down to Lifestyle & Shopping and click on Government. Towards the end, you’ll find the icon SSS-PRN.
Step 5: Input your details
After choosing your Account Type, which is PRN, input the 14-digit PRN that you took note of. Then, enter the amount you need to pay and select Payor Type. In my case, I click on Voluntary. It’s optional but you can input your email address to get a copy of your proof of payment.
That’s it! It’s that easy. After a few days, it will reflect in your Contributions. I usually get a text message from SSS as well that my contributions have been received. I blurred out my contributions above for privacy. But I decided to already pay until the end of 2022!
