Where to Play Ultimate in Manila: An Ultimate Newbie’s Guide

It amazes me each time I think about how much Ultimate has grown in the country, most especially because I started playing back when there were only enough teams to fill up the Ateneo High School fields. The community then was so small, that everyone knew each other and it was all about maintaining good spirit.

Because Ultimate has evolved into such a competitive sport (more so that there are tournaments like the World Ultimate Guts Championships and the ongoing World Championships of Beach Ultimate), people left and right have been wanting to know more about the sport and how they can join.

Below are two venues where you can learn the basics, and further develop your skills:

1. Beginners’ Night at Meralco Oval

This is the perfect place if you’re a newbie or would want to learn the basics of the sport, because you’re surrounded with both fellow newbies who are just as eager to learn, and veterans who are so passionate about the sport and are more than willing to help you grow into a skilled player. This is something you can schedule with friends, especially since it’s a weekly thing!

Back in college when Beg Night used to be held at Manila Polo Club, my teammates and I would join once in a while because of the many things we learned from Coach F. Aside from getting more familiar with the rules and knowing the proper ways of throwing, we learned how to master plays that eventually helped us in our game.

2. Sunken Pleasure Summer Clinic (First Leg)

Sunken Pleasure is hailed as one of the most competitive teams not just in Metro Manila, but in the whole country.

They won the first ever Nationals held a couple of years ago, and display good spirit in every game.

I’ve had the pleasure of playing against them numerous times, and our games are always tough yet fun. There were also occasions I became teammates with some of their players, and I learned so much from their style of playing. Their clinic’s also a good opportunity for newbies and veterans alike to further hone their skills.

They’ll be having the first leg of their Summer Clinic this March 14 (Saturday) at the Sunken Garden. To sign up or register, visit http://bit.ly/SPSummerClinic. You can also visit the event page here for more details.

If in case you can’t make it to Sunken Pleasure’s clinic this Saturday, be sure to Like their Facebook page here to stay updated on when their next clinic will be.

Will try to update this article should there be more clinics and Beg Nights, so check back often just in case!
