What It Takes to Run a Successful Comedy Showcase

If you love comedy and want to run a showcase of your own, it’s important that you plan carefully. Not only is an event of this type difficult to plan. But you also have to work hard to sell it to the locals so that they’ll attend and find comedians that will bring the house down in laughter. This is what it takes to run a comedy showcase and ensure it succeeds.

Budget Your Comedy Showcase Before Anything Else

The budget matters because it will affect what you can afford for everything else.  Be realistic about what you can afford if you can grab sponsors and interest in your event.  Although some take out loans to afford more for their events, if you’ve never hosted one before, avoid it for your first event. Instead, try to gather funds in other ways like getting investors.

Consider Size and Type of Venue

How large of a venue will you need for your comedy showcase?  The larger the platform, the more room for customers. But if you overshoot, you may end up having comedians feeling like they’re talking to an empty space. Try to gauge the interest in your event and build out from there.

Decide on the Equipment You’ll Need

It would be awesome if every comedian enunciated their words loudly and was able to be heard over the din of drinks, laughter, and conversations. But that’s not possible for everyone. So instead, a microphone and audio setup matters. Not only for the audience’s comfort but also, microphones are a classic prop for comedians and give them something to do with their hands. So it’s a great idea to have a good sound setup.

Hire Your Awesome Comedians

The comedians you hire should be people that you’re willing to stake your brand on!  This means showstoppers like Damon Wayans Jr. can bring a unique flavor of comedy that will leave people laughing and make possible attendees excited just at the mention of his name. You can find comedians in many ways—from posting on local social media to seeking them out on gig sites. But make sure to ask for samples of their standup routines to get a feel of it before you hire them.

Decide on Ticketing and Marketing

When you’re planning this comedy showcase, you may consider selling tickets only at the door. But this could leave you with far fewer people than you expect. Instead, market thoroughly and allow people to buy tickets in advance.  These will encourage them to show up since they already put the money down and help remind them when and where the event is.  Market thoroughly from the showcase’s inception up until the first act goes on stage!

Planning a Comedy Showcase Is the Only Unfunny Part of it!

Scheduling, booking, budgeting, and getting the showcase to happen flawlessly is a ton of work and weight on your shoulders.  The fantastic thing is when it’s all over, you’ll get an awesome comedy showcase that will leave you laughing and everyone having a great time!  The planning is worth it.
