Ever since I was a little girl, I suffered from allergic rhinitis. It’s a type of inflammation that runs in the family—but while symptoms of my siblings and cousins improved over the years, mine (and my mom’s) are still the worst. It usually attacks in the morning or when something triggers it (like dust, pollen, and strong fragrances).
However, living with constant attacks has taught me that there are a few home remedies for allergic rhinitis that can help!Just a quick disclaimer that what works for me might not always work for others (and vice-versa). But I hope you learn a thing or two on how I’m able to effectively manage my allergic rhinitis with the following:
Quality Air Purifier
A few years ago, my parents bought a Sharp Air Purifier for me—which proved to be the biggest game-changer for my allergic rhinitis! I would switch it on for 8 hours every night before going to sleep. Doing so made significant improvements and lessened my attacks. I no longer sneezed non-stop every morning despite having carpeted floors, stuffed toys, and pets in the room I slept in.
When I got married and moved out last September 2019, I brought the air purifier with me. Since then, I can’t recall ever getting attacks in our 38-sqm studio unit—considering we have a pet dog and cat! Aside from preventing my allergic rhinitis, it also helped lessen the build-up of dust in our space.
Home Diffuser
When Young Living gave me a Dew Drop Home Diffuser and a set of essential oils safe for pets, I was so excited. I read studies that showed diffusers help improve sleep, reduce stress, and eliminate odors. Another benefit of having a home diffuser is it improves respiratory health, which is good for my asthma. On top of this, any prolonged attack of my allergic rhinitis usually leads to the flu. The worst cases are when it results in dry cough, which could then trigger my asthma. (I’m such a sickly kid, I know!) Whenever I do end up with a bad cough, I diffuse a few drops of eucalyptus or bergamot. (I just make sure my pets aren’t with me since eucalyptus can be toxic for them.) These supposedly help alleviate it!
Nasal Spray
Another helpful item whenever my allergic rhinitis makes my nose extra dry and stuffy is using Salinase, a salt solution that rinses and moisturizes the nostrils. I do 2 sprays per nostril once or twice a day. You can get this from any leading drugstore nationwide!
Throat Spray
A typical symptom of allergic rhinitis is an itchy throat, which I sometimes experience. But these days, it makes me a little more paranoid because of the ongoing pandemic. To treat my itchy throat caused by my allergies, I spray 1 to 2 sprays of Kamillosan or Betadine Sore Throat Spray. The itchiness disappears in an instant!
Eye Drops
Another symptom that I hate is having itchy or irritated eyes. Luckily, I always have a bottle of Cellufresh eye drops with me. This was prescribed by my ophthalmologist when I had my LASIK surgery in 2016. I still use it to this day because it’s helpful whenever my eyes get itchy and irritated, or dry from looking at my phone or computer screen for too long.
These are items I’ve had for years and have become my home remedies for allergic rhinitis. If you have any questions about them, feel free to send them in the comments! And if you know anyone who suffers from allergic rhinitis, share this article with them.
