Hey, everyone! Here’s another review that I’ve been itching to write since the end of Calyxta’s Sealed with a Kiss lipstick sale. As a lover of liquid lipsticks, I feel like I’ve tried and tested a number of them in my lifestime as a beauty blogger, and I can honestly say that I’ve never, ever tried anything like Maybelline’s Super Stay Matte Ink.
And I legit mean that.I’ll be completely honest in this review and say that while my favorite liquid lipstick brand of all time is Ofra, and I’m so drawn towards my Kylie Lip Kit in Candy K and Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita, there is nothing quite like the staying power of the Super Stay Matte Ink.
So much so, that I’m starting to think if that’s a good thing or not. Which is weird, right?
Anyway, Maybelline sent over 10 shades a couple of weeks ago—and this was around the same time that it became available on Calyxta. During our Sealed with a Kiss lipstick sale, I tried swatching Dreamer, and found it a little too pink for my makeup look, so I got micellar water and tried to remove the lipstick—and oh my gosh, it wouldn’t budge! During the same event, a couple of customers swatched it in the morning then left for lunch, and when they returned in the late afternoon, one of them fell in love so hard with the staying power that she bought one for herself. The next day, she came back and told us how amazed she was that even after brushing her teeth and trying to remove the product with makeup remover, the lipstick was still there!
Just this weekend, curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to swatch all 10 shades on my arm. (Imagine how hard it was to remove after, even with my strongest oil-based makeup remover!) I intended to swatch them on my lips as well, but failed because when I tried the lightest shade, which was Loyalist, it took me forever to remove. Even as the day went by and I brushed my teeth, went out and watched Black Panther with the Cupcake’s family then had dinner, and then went home and brushed my teeth again, the lipstick stayed. Not kidding. And so swatching all 10 shades would have been too crazy on my lips, which is why I just swatched them on my arm instead.
Of the shades, I was immediately attracted to Loyalist and Lover. Though if I’m feeling a little bolder, I would definitely try Escapist (it reminds me of Ofra’s Havana Nights!). One of my officemates, Minggo Shake (that’ll be her nickname here on my blog from now on) wore Voyager the whole day during our lipstick sale, and she looked so fabulous and fierce. She told me she had to swipe on a few coats, because one application left the lips with a bit of a sheer, streaky color. This is the kind of lipstick that you’ll need to build to get the full vibrancy (especially for the darker shades).
Comfort wise, it’s slightly sticky and it takes a while to dry. But it’s completely transfer-proof once the product dries on your lips, and when it does, it dries into a matte, semi-powdery finish. And when I say completely transfer-proof, I mean it won’t stick on your tissue nor wine glass. Minggo Shake even ate pizza, and the lipstick didn’t budge nor transfer at all. It’s quite impressive in that sense.
The price is obviously very affordable. I don’t think you can find a liquid lipstick that performs this good for only Php 299. I think the only things I would have to say about it is that I wish they came in more colors (or maybe they do, but I’m just not updated with it), that they come out with a nice, coral shade that’s wearable for everyday (maybe something that’s more muted than Heroine), and that they let us know what kind of makeup remover to use when removing it, because it is crazy difficult to remove! And speaking of, I think what’s stopping me from wearing the darker shades right now, despite how gorgeous they all are, is that I’m so afraid of having to rub my lips dry until the lipstick (and eventually the skin of my lips!) get off. That’s what I meant when I said that I was starting to think if it’s a good thing or not. Am I willing to put my lips through all that trouble?
If you ask me though, this is something I’m definitely wearing to big events, especially because I’m guaranteed of its longevity. And seriously, for a lipstick that’s less than Php 500 with that kind of staying power and range of shades, I think it’s worth buying! Just make sure to buy an equally strong makeup remover to take it off at the end of the day. Haha!
You can purchase Maybelline’s Super Stay Matte Ink for only Php 299 at Calyxta.
