How to Save Money from Salary: Ways Technology Has Helped Me

Hi, everyone! Welcome to Greta’s Junkyard. If you’re new here, my name is Gretchen and I’m a writer and editor based in Metro Manila, Philippines. This blog serves as a creative outlet where I like to write about a variety of topics—including the different ways I save money from my salary. If this is something that interests you, I hope you enjoy reading my article!

Just to give a quick background about myself: I work full-time as a managing editor of a parenting magazine. However, on the side, I run this blog and online shop. This was something I started back in 2013 when I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my career. Fortunately, as I gained more experience, so did my value. And throughout the years, I was able to save money from my salary as well as my side projects. This helped my then-boyfriend-now-husband Cayo and I settle down, move into our forever home, and start a family. Of course, we continue to save and invest for our future and also our baby girl Cambria‘s future.

Thanks to the wonders of technology, I’m able to track my expenses and am constantly motivated to save money. Here are the different ways that technology has helped me!

Different Ways Technology Helps Me Save Money from My Salary

1. Use a savings calculator

I recently discovered a savings calculator that lets you compute different things easily—whether you’re saving up for college or retirement and more. The best part about this savings calculator is that it’s absolutely free! Though it’s set in US Dollars, it still works for us Filipinos. You can just convert everything into Philippine pesos. There are clear instructions on how to use their tools, which lets you learn more about finances, too. You can use their calculator to quickly figure out how much money you will have saved up during a set investment period. It’s such a useful tool that I recommend taking advantage of.

2. Track my expenses using an app

There are a lot of apps that help track expenses. Just choose one from the App Store or Google Play Store. I personally use Toshl because I like the cute monsters that motivate me to stick to my budget. Every time I spend, I make sure to take note of it on the app.

3. Grow my money through digital banks

Digital banks like Tonik are another way I’m able to grow my money. The user-friendly interface together with the fun, millennial language inspires me not just to save but also to put my money in time deposits.

4. Monitor my investments

Last but not least—technology allows me to monitor my investments. I have several insurance and investment policies that I hope can sustain me when I retire. Again, these have apps that I can quickly open with one swipe. And thanks to these apps, I can conveniently monitor the growth of my investments anytime I want to!
