How to Clean Makeup Brushes with a Brush Egg

Earlier today during the #JunkyardTurns2 Makeup Workshop, I was asked for advice on how to clean makeup brushes—so here I am now to write a quick tutorial on how I clean mine!

Before the invention of the brush egg and brush stand, I used to just clean my makeup brushes with water, liquid soap, and olive oil.

I read somewhere that olive oil keeps the brushes soft and well-maintained. I would put a few drops of liquid soap and one drop of olive oil in a container, then add in some water. I would then use an old towel to remove the residue, and sometimes this would take hours—especially if you have tons of makeup brushes like me! I would then leave the brushes overnight to dry on a towel and covered by another towel, but I found this to be ineffective because the brushes don’t dry evenly.

Thankfully, someone invented the brush egg which cuts down my cleaning time in half, and a brush stand, where you can hang your brushes upside down and leave them to dry evenly.

How do you use a brush egg exactly? Here’s how:

Step 1:

Mix shampoo and a little water in a container.

Step 2:

Wet your brush and dip it in the shampoo formula.

Step 3: Use the brush egg to remove the residue and clean the brush thoroughly. The brush egg is effective in removing all kinds of makeup. I was so impressed that it made my white brushes white again!

Step 4: Hang them upside down using a brush stand.

And there you have it! Clean makeup brushes in an instant! How often do I clean my brushes? After each time I use them! I’m very particular about mine and my clients’ skin, so I always make sure my brushes are free of germs or bacteria. Skincare will always be more important for me, and like I said in today’s makeup workshop, good makeup starts with good skin! And good skin happens if your brushes are always clean! Hahaha.
